Pool closed all day Tuesday 7/7/26
Wheeler Recreation Area, Inc. (WRA) was established in 1960 and maintains and operates a “swim club” on Alcott Street in Acton, MA. The facility contains two pools: a full-size pool, staffed by certified lifeguards, and a "baby" pool. The pool has remained the same modest facility with the same philosophy as when it first opened: it was designed to be a place where families could gather to spend time with their children and their neighbors. Many lifelong friendships have been forged over the years and can trace their beginnings to meeting each other in the “baby pool.”
Every family who lives within Robbins Park (Alcott St, Berry Ln, Bromfield Rd, Concord Pl, Emerson Dr, Forest Rd, Hawthorne St, Horseshoe Dr, Hosmer St North of Rt 2, Longfellow Park, Minot Ave, Phalen St, Thoreau, Rd, Whittier Dr, Concord Rd from Concord Pl to Great Rd) and pays the yearly dues is invited to join the association each summer as a "Neighborhood Member." Neighborhood members are required to serve two years on the Board of Trustees. ”Wildcard” members are those from outside the neighborhood who are sponsored by neighborhood members to join, if space allows.
Since Wheeler is a community pool, all members have a role. Wheeler Recreation Area is run by the Board of Trustees, which consists of Neighborhood member volunteers who operate and maintain the pools, buildings, and grounds; hire lifeguards; track finances and membership; schedule and oversee swim lessons, swim team practices, and swim meets; among other responsibilities. To enhance our sense of community and reduce membership fees, all members not currently serving on the Board of Trustees are required to commit to four hours of work duty per year (e.g., watering the plants, weeding, skimming) or are allowed to opt out by paying an additional fee. (Seniors and Single Members are exempt from work duty). The strong sense of community at our pool is further strengthened by member volunteers who organize events such as Bingo and movie nights.
