Swim Lessons

OVERVIEW
You must be a member of the Wheeler Pool to participate in swim lessons.
Swim lessons will begin Monday, June 24 and will run through Friday, August 2. Class assignments and class schedules for all participants will be finalized once swim evaluations have been completed on June 1st with a makeup date on June 8th. Each participant will be assigned a time slot. Notice will go out via email once the swim lesson schedule has been posted at the pool on June 10th.
Our teaching staff guards are thoughtful instructors who care about composing classes to create a safe learning environment for every child. Thank you for your patience as our staff works to complete evaluations based on the Red Cross guidelines to carefully determine your child’s level. All swim classes meet five days a week. Every Friday is “Game Day,” the first half of the lesson is a normal swim lesson, and the final 15-20 minutes the children are allowed to play games. We are happy to announce the return of Popsicle Fridays too.
Swim evaluations for level placement will take place on June 1st from 8am-11am with a makeup date on June 8th from 8am-11am. Evaluations are only for those who are unsure of their swimmer’s level and would like the guards to assess their skills for class placement.
During swim lessons, anyone not actively participating in lessons at that time, is prohibited from the main pool deck. The grassy area and wading pool area may be used.
Children may only swim during their assigned swim lesson time slot; swimmers may not switch or drop-in to another slot for the sake of convenience. Guests will not be permitted to swim in the pool during swim lessons.
Eligibility
For your child to be eligible for swim lessons, a neighborhood family membership or a wildcard family membership is required. Furthermore, individuals must reside at your address to be included in your membership. Please refer to our membership options for more detailed information.
Swim Lesson Age Limit Policy
(Approved by the Board - November 6, 2013)
Children must be 4 years old by June 1 to take part in swim lessons. Children who turn 4 years in June, July, or August of that summer may test to be an exception. All children in lessons must be toilet trained.
LESSON CANCELLATION
The pool must be closed and lessons must be cancelled in the event of prolonged thunder or contaminated water. Notice of cancellation will be posted on the Wheeler Homepage and email notifications will be sent as soon as possible, once cancellation has been determined. Please check the website first if the skies look threatening. There are no make-up lessons.
Thunderstorm Safety: The pool will be cleared when the guard on duty hears thunder and will remain cleared for 20 minutes before swimmers are allowed to re-enter. Each time thunder is heard, the 20-minute timer is reset.
