Shallow & Deep End Regulations

DEEP END REGULATIONS

● All children (even guests) age 12 and under must pass the Deep End Test before they are allowed to swim in the deep end of the pool unaccompanied by an adult. Otherwise, they are not permitted to cross the line that divides the shallow from deep end.

● If a child is under age 5 AND has passed the Deep End Test, they can only go in the deep end if accompanied by an adult.

● Swimmers older than age 12 must determine themselves if they are strong enough to swim in the deep end.

● A lifeguard may ask a weaker swimmer of any age to stay in the shallow end when the pool is crowded or if they feel a swimmer is not strong enough, too tired, etc.

THE DEEP END TEST

1. When a child asks the lifeguard to take the Deep End Test, the lifeguard will set aside a lane at the side of the pool. If the lifeguard is the only one on duty or if the pool is crowded, the lifeguard may ask the child to wait until the next Adult Swim to take the test.

2. The child will be asked to jump in along the deep end wall.

3. The child will be asked to swim two lengths of freestyle/crawl without stopping. The child will not pass if they touch the ground at any point or stops after one length for more than a couple seconds.

4. The child will be asked to tread water in the deep end for a one, full minute without stopping, holding on, or allowing any part of the face to go underwater.

5. If the child passes without difficulty, their full name and age will be listed on the official deep end list in the guard binder.

6. The guard’s judgement is final. Guards have complete discretion to ensure safety for members and guests. 

SHALLOW END REGULATIONS

Adults must accompany all non-swimming children in the main pool. Children unattended who appear unsafe will be required to take the Shallow End Test. Lifeguards have complete discretion and will enforce this rule to ensure the safety of all members and guests.

THE SHALLOW END TEST

1. Start halfway between the stairs and the opposite side of the pool.

2. The child will be asked to jump into the shallow end and swim on their front to the stairs, and then stand briefly.

3. The child be be asked to float on their back for 5 seconds.

4. The child will be asked to float on their front for 5 seconds.

5. If the child passes the test without difficulty, the child’s full name and age will be entered it into the official shallow end list in the guard binder.

All children who do not pass the shallow end test when asked to take it must be accompanied by an adult in the pool at all times.
